Coffee Shops for "The Morning Coffee":
The above map locates some of the better (and more independent) coffee shops within Greenwich Village and Soho. Indicated by numbers on the map above, and described below, are a selection of some of the best places for getting your morning coffee, coffee to go, or just relaxing with a cup of joe.
1. Porto Rico Importing Company (SoHo), 107 Thompson Street
A tiny little store on an otherwise quite street, with sacks of coffee beans piles to the ceiling, this is perhaps one of the best coffee spots in the city, let alone the West Village or SoHo. Quintessential Greenwich Village atmosphere from another time, with a couple cafe tables among the piled beans, usually occupied by people reading (not the cell phone using computer hackers you'll find at most other coffee locations). If you're in the city for a day, this is where you'll want to get coffee.

2. Porto Rico Importing Company (Greenwich Village), 201 Bleecker Street
The big brother to the Porto Rico Coffee Company location in SoHo listed above. Established in 1907, this far outdates almost all other coffee places in the city, but certainly any specialty coffee places in the Village. Bags and barrels of coffee abound with varieties from around the world in every imaginable flavor. People travel from far outside the city to get their fresh beans here, and for the locals, a great cup of coffee to go.

3. Amy's Bread, 250 Bleecker Street
Friendly neighborhood service, and a good strong coffee. Of course, as the name implies, coffee is not all that is served in this great bakery. The Parisian breakfast is a particular favorite, with small baguettes and a large "very European" bowl of coffee, you can't go wrong.
4. Joe the Art of Coffee, 141 Waverly Place
A great place for the morning coffee or at any other time. The casual atmosphere encourages people to linger so don't expect to get a seat, but if your lucky they have a great place to sit outside and watch the passersby on waverly. The "art" comes from the careful attention to foam patterns when ordering your cappuccino.
5. The Grey Dog (The Grey Dog's Coffee), 33 Carmine Street
A popular place at all times, this West Village take on the Martha's Vineyard look (aka the Black Dog), fits perfectly on Carmine Street. Great coffee, friendly table delivery of your favorite foods ordered at the counter, there's no surprise there's usually a line. But if you can't wait, just jump to the front and get your coffee to go.
6. Brewbar, 327 West 11th Street
7. Patisserie Claude, 187 West 4th Street, between Barrow and Jones Streets
A little taste of a French Bakery right in the middle of the West Village. Some of the best croissants in the village are served here, from the traditional to the almond and chocolate, all are delicious. But here it is listed for its coffee, which is equally as good as the baked goods. For the coffee lover though, you might have to order two or three.
